For those students participating in the important California Youth Climate Strike on Friday, March 15 and in support of students fighting for action on climate change, we are proud to provide a safe space for students to continue this important conversation. We invite students to join members of our Education staff to discuss how animals feel the threat of climate change and how we can work together to fix it. As an active member of the National Network for Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation (NNOCCI), we want to help empower these students to discuss innovative solutions and to spread a message of hope. Meet us at SF Zoo on Friday, March 15 at 1:30 p.m. to learn more about climate change, visit and take photos from our California Coastal Center overlooking the magnificent Pacific Ocean and receive free admission to the Zoo for the rest of the day.

Join us in welcoming Rachel Mazur, Ph.D., Chief of Wildlife, Yosemite National Park, as she presents, “Tales from Over 100 Years of Human-Bear Management at Yosemite National Park." The story of Yosemite's human-bear management program is the story of conservation success. It started over 150 years ago and gradually got worse until, in 1998, Yosemite's bears participated in over 1500 incidents with humans. In 2018, bears participated in fewer than 20 incidents with humans. Come learn the stories behind the trial and error, research, inventions, and pure grit that made this success possible.

With the turn of a plastic elephant key into a metal box, stories and facts about different animals came to life for hundreds of thousands of San Francisco Zoo visitors starting in 1959. These fun, informative talking storyboxes were invented in the 1950’s by a well-known Bay Area children’s entertainer and puppeteer, complete with the song, “All of the animals in the zoo are jumping up and down for you!” You can still find the talking storyboxes at the Zoo, one of the many memories that make the Zoo so special for so many. Do you still have your original storybox key?
