Women's History Month: Pioneer Mother Memorial
We're celebrating Women's History Month by featuring some of the most influential
and noteworthy women in our parks and city. This week, we take a closer look at 
the Pioneer Mother Memorial in Golden Gate Park, the only sculpture of a woman in
the park. Located near the Pioneer Log Cabin, a huge figure of a cloaked woman with
outstretched hands and two youthful innocents stands as a symbolic tribute to all
mothers who braved the journey West over land or sea. The inscription on the base
of the statue states, "Over rude paths beset with hunger and risk she pressed onward
toward the vision of a better country." Thank you to these brave women pioneers

Lawn Bowling Club Opening Day on March 16
Join the San Francisco Lawn Bowling Club as it celebrates opening day of 2019, as

highlights Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as a numbered
entrant. While running, a race official tried to tear off her official bib as women
were not allowed to officially run in the marathon at that time. However, Switzer's
boyfriend notoriously shoved the official to the ground, allowing Switzer to finish
the race! Thank you for being a female pioneer for recreation and women in sports!
