San Francisco Zoo & Gardens proudly embraces the diversity of our great city. We add our voice to those who are speaking out against racial injustice in America. All people are welcome in our community. Discrimination, bigotry, and hatred have no place here.
As we continue to navigate the frightening newness of the COVID-19 pandemic, we also acknowledge the painfully familiar longstanding racial disparities and injustices exemplified by the senseless death of George Floyd and other people of color. All of us – individually, and collectively as a community – are seeking ways to make sense of a world which seems to be upended on a daily basis. The isolation of sheltering in place, coupled with the uncertainty of what awaits us once we venture out again, further heighten the sense of confusion and anxiety for many.
Natural, open spaces provide safe sanctuary for people to come together – for rest, relaxation, spirited thoughtful discourse, and a celebration of the differences which make all of us better. While we do not yet know when the Zoo will be able to reopen to the public, we look forward to once again being able to welcome ALL people through our gates.
June marks Zoo and Aquarium Month, and while this designation may appear less significant in light of all that is going on in the world, it is also an opportunity to view zoos as the multi-cultural bridge-building institutions that they are. All of our visitors experience our animals in exactly the same way – that visceral connection is immune to differences based upon race, color, gender, ability, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, or any other defining characteristic. It is a world we all wish to see.
