High temperatures, extreme dryness and record-high winds have created conditions in our state where any spark at the wrong time and place can lead to a major wildfire. Our Community Wildfire Safety Program includes short-, medium- and long-term plans to make our system safer by: • Installing new grid technology • Hardening the electric system • Performing enhanced vegetation management If severe weather threatens a portion of the electric system, it may be necessary for PG&E to turn off electricity in the interest of public safety. This is known as a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). With more than half of the area where our customers live and work now at high risk for wildfires, PSPS is an important tool for keeping customers and communities safe. Turning off power can prevent wildfires, but also disrupts lives and can include its own risks, particularly for those who need power for medical equipment. Below are just some of the things we are doing to reduce customer impacts in 2020 and beyond: • Smaller in Size: Reducing the number of customers affected by nearly one-third compared to similar weather events last year. • Shorter in Length: Nearly doubling the number of helicopters and adding more field crews to speed up inspections and cut restoration times in half compared to 2019 so that we restore power typically within 12 daylight hours after severe weather has passed. • Smarter for Customers: Improving our weather monitoring technology and installing advanced weather stations to more precisely forecast weather that could lead to a PSPS event. We are also providing better information and resources to customer and communities, including our most vulnerable customers. Are you ready? We all rely on electricity for everyday life. To help prepare for a PSPS event, here are a few things to consider: • Updating your contact information at pge.com/mywildfirealerts or by calling 1-866-743-6589. • Planning for medical needs like medications that require refrigeration or devices that need power. • Building or restocking your emergency kit with flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies and cash. • Do you have a medical condition? We encourage customers who rely on electricity for medical or life support devices to apply for PG&E's Medical Baseline program at pge.com/medicalbaseline. *Due to COVID-19 shelter-in-place requirements and changing medical practitioner priorities, PG&E customers can self-certify their eligibility to enroll in the medical baseline program. SIGNATURE BY A QUALIFIED MEDICAL PRACTITIONER IS NOT REQUIRED to apply but may be required to remain on the program beyond one year. • Will you need extra help during a power shutoff? If you or someone you know has a disability or additional special needs, the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers can help you prepare for a PSPS.
