As humanity deals with the COVID-19 pandemic and the lives and livelihood of so many are affected, the resulting economic decline has had a detrimental domino effect on wildlife. The furlough of the brave rangers who guarded African preserves has led to a rise in poaching. Travel restrictions everywhere have stopped the eco-tourism that provided financial incentive to support rare species in their native lands. And vast quantities of plastics continue to make their way to sea. On May 15, we will observe Endangered Species Day and reflect on how zoos may be home to all that is left of certain species.

Endangered Species Day provides us the opportunity to come together to help nature. Our combined efforts can preserve and save endangered species, such as the tigers, lemurs, and rhinoceroses at the amazing 100 acre outdoor park that is the San Francisco Zoo and Gardens.

One member of an endangered species we hope you will get to meet very soon is our newest Western lowland gorilla, a 14-year-old female transferred to San Francisco Zoo and Gardens recently as part of a breeding recommendation through the Gorilla Species Survival Plan (SSP). The female has been integrated with our resident group and is hoped to eventually breed with our male silverback, Oscar Jonesy.

As an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, we work cooperatively with other member institutions to manage the breeding of selected endangered species in order to maintain a healthy, self-sustaining population that is genetically diverse and demographically stable.

Thanks to your continued support, you make the future possible for these endangered species. In honor of Endangered Species Day, all donations received from now through the weekend will be used to support the many endangered species at the Zoo. And in support of our many partner organizations doing field work in the wild, and in honor of our new gorilla, all donations received this weekend up to $3,500 will be matched by the Zoological Society with a donation to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.
