Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Observation Wheel Opens The wait is over! The 150-foot, illuminated Observation Wheel in Golden Gate Park is ready to ride starting today, Wednesday, October 21. The wheel, which provides riders with sweeping views from the ocean to downtown San Francisco, celebrates Golden Gate Park’s 150th anniversary. In honor of its launch, all tickets will be reduced to $10 from October 21 through 25. Buy your tickets today! To prevent the spread of Covid-19, all reservations to ride must be made in advance. Riders must wear masks and practice social distancing. Each of the 36 fully enclosed, climate-controlled gondolas will be thoroughly cleaned between uses. Each gondola will be shared only by people in the same household. The Observation Wheel is located in the Music Concourse, the outdoor plaza near the de Young Museum, the California Academy of Sciences, and the Japanese Tea Garden. To provide feedback on the wheel opening, email RPDInfo at sfgov.org. Purchase Tickets Newly Renovated Bandshell Ready for its Debut In partnership with the San Francisco Parks Alliance and Illuminate, and thanks to generous philanthropic support, we have completed renovations of the 120-year-old Spreckels Temple of Music bandshell. Originally slated to be a centerpiece of Golden Gate Park’s 150th anniversary celebration in April, the opening was delayed due to COVID. However, the new stage, with built-in theatrical lighting and sound systems, is now complete. Starting today, October 21–coinciding with the opening of the 150-foot tall Observation Wheel–the construction fence will come down and the bandshell lights will begin to shine nightly from sunset to park closing. We look forward to more fully celebrating with community performances on the stage, once health regulations allow. Taking Lessons Outside: Community Gardening for SF Students Rec and Park's Urban Agriculture and Community Gardens team is providing garden-based enrichment to support the city’s Community Hub Initiative at Betty Ann Ong, Eureka Valley, Mission and Joe Lee recreation centers this fall. Students are learning about the value of urban agriculture, how to plant seeds and cuttings, and how to care for their plants. A special thanks to our entire Urban Agriculture and Community Gardens team, as well as our Recreation staff, for providing valuable lessons to our city kids, in and outside of the classroom.
