ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
We are excited to introduce you to our two new male penguin chicks! These two cuties hatched back on May 19 and will be waddling their way to their new home on Penguin Island this Saturday at March of the Penguins! Band #289, seen squinting heavily in the photo above, is very reserved and thoughful in his movements and actions. He is the smaller of the two but is also the leader and tends to try things first. He loves swimming and likes to stick his head underwater to explore. Band #288 on the other hand is a bit more clumsy as his feet are a little too big for his body. He gets the zoomies easily and loves playing with all sorts of enrichment.
Before the event on Saturday, you are invited to help us name band #288. Visit our Twitter poll (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=eeffcdf4bb&e=7683a9aed3) to pick your favorite name. The winner will be announced Saturday at the event! At this time, Member Reservations for the event are now full. Keep your eye out on social media for adorable footage of the event!
CONSERVATION HIGHLIGHT
Wednesday, July 28, marked another successful frog release by our Conservation Team in partnership with the Oakland Zoo, University of California, Santa Barbara and the National Park Service, with nearly 200 Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frogs released to Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park. Over the past year, our in-house conservationists reared 161 individual frogs (with 33 individuals reared by the Oakland Zoo) from tadpole stage to adult frogs. Our very own Director of Conservation, Jessie Bushell, joined her Oakland Zoo and National Park partners delivering the frogs to the Park's Fire and Rescue Response helicopter who flew them to three sites “far into the back country.” Here, teams of biologists were waiting for the frogs to arrive and be released into their new wild homes. Due to a myriad of threats that have devastated populations of the endangered Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog, including invasive fish introduced for recreational fishing that prey on the frogs, and the deadly
Chytrid disease, the goal of the program is to re-establish and maintain a healthy breeding population in the wild. Great work, team!
We are happy to share the news that Costa Rica recently named the sloth it’s national symbol! This is an incredible opportunity to increase awareness and protection for sloths. We are proud to be home to two Southern two-toed sloths here at SF Zoo. Congratulations to our friends in Costa Rica on their new symbol. Let's continue our work to be a voice for these spectacular animals!
PREPARING KIDS FOR BACK TO SCHOOL

Heading back to school can bring up all kinds of emotions for kids—from nerves to excitement to stress. After months of remote learning during the pandemic, this back-to-school season is sure to be even more emotional than usual.
Dr. Julia Pederson (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=2dbb9fd448&e=7683a9aed3) , a pediatrician at Stanford Children's Health, outlines five ways to prepare your kids for in-person school:
* Make mask wearing part of your daily routine.
* Teach kids to sneeze into their elbow, not their hands.
* Reflect on each day as a family.
* Acknowledge that change can be hard.
* Plan family time when kids can just have fun.
"One of the most important things that we can do is just be there for our kids and recognize how they're feeling," Dr. Pederson said.
Dr. Pederson also recommends that parents reach out to their pediatrician with any questions or concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine.

On July 31st, we celebrated a milestone birthday...Oscar Jonesy turned 40! Oscar, a dutiful silverback, can often be seen monitoring his home to make sure all is safe and well. Our incredible staff went all out to put together an enriching party for Oscar and the rest of the troop. Thank you, Oscar, for being a magnificent ambassador for western lowland gorillas.
