In honor of World Orangutan Day (August 19), meet our genial pair of Bornean orangutans, Judy and Berani, who represent one of the most critically endangered species on earth. Unfortunately, wild orangutans face the constant pressure of extinction due to a variety of complicated issues including habitat loss and fragmentation, illegal poaching, and a high demand for palm oil for consumer products. Use the shopping guides (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=5d3557b1cc&e=7683a9aed3) created by our friends at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo to shop for products made by companies certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil.

We are proud to support the SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction orangutan program, which was created back in 2018. This program moves beyond the goals of the AZA Orangutan Species Survival Plan (SSP), of which the aim is to manage our captive populations, by focusing specifically on the conservation of the wild orangutan population. The Orangutan SAFE Program aims to protect and restore the wild orangutan population and their habitats through public engagement, funding, and field work. On August 14, we celebrated World Lizard Day! During this social media celebration, we highlighted some of the magnificnet lizards of the Koret Animal Resource Center, including blue-tongued skink, Gunner! Members in good standing are invited to attend the Annual Meeting of the San Francisco Zoological Society on September 21. The main item of business will be the election of officers & directors, as well as any proposed amendment(s) to the Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws.
