Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks State-of-the-Art Tennis Center Opens in Golden Gate Park The new Lisa & Douglas Goldman Tennis Center in Golden Gate Park opened to the public today after a $27 million renovation to transform the facility into a state-of-the-art public tennis center accessible to first-time players and seasoned athletes alike. The Goldman Tennis Center includes 16 USTA-regulation tennis courts, including a sunken stadium style court. Lighting on the courts will allow users to enjoy an additional 20,000 hours of play annually. Five mini-courts can be used to teach young children the game or for pickleball. Off the court, the Taube Family Clubhouse features a lounge, recreation room, locker room and kitchen. The ADA-accessible site includes new patio spaces and a garden. “Spin,” an outdoor vibrant ceramic tile mural with a kaleidoscopic effect by artist Sanaz Mazinani and engaged through the San Francisco Arts Commission, features images of trailblazers on and off the court: Alice Marble, Arthur Ashe, Billie Jean King and Roger Federer. Due to Covid-19 health precautions, reservations are required. Book your reservation at GoldmanTennisCenter.com. Book Court Reservation SkyStar Wheel to Spin Until 2025, to Reopen March 4 The SkyStar Wheel in Golden Gate Park will be permitted to spin until 2025. The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) voted unanimously this afternoon to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness, allowing the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department to extend its contract with the wheel’s operator. The Recreation and Park Commission previously approved the contract extension contingent on the HPC’s vote. The SkyStar Wheel will re-open Thursday, March 4 at noon following San Francisco entering the less restrictive red tier earlier this week. Everyday discounts for San Francisco residents were also announced today. Beginning Monday, March 8, residents can purchase adult tickets for $15.30, while tickets for San Francisco children (3-12) and seniors (65+) will be $10.20, a 15 percent savings. More information can be found at skystarwheel.com In addition, SkyStar and SF Rec and Park will offer to all San Francisco public school graduating seniors a chance to take a free ride on the Wheel this summer beginning June 2 through September 6. Students will need to show their SFUSD identification card at the on-site ticket booth for the free ride. With this reopening, SkyStar will also continue to provide the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department with 500 free tickets each month for families enrolled in the City’s Community Hub Initiative, which provide in-person support for distance learning for San Francisco’s highest needs children and youth. SkyStar tickets are now available for purchase and may be reserved by ordering online below. Entwined in Golden Gate Park Outdoor Youth Sports to Return with Safety Precautions It's time to play ball! San Francisco's assignment to the red tier allows outdoor contact sports, organized and supervised through youth sports leagues, all with safety protocols. We're helping to facilitate the return of youth sports this spring by launching a field allocation program in partnership with local youth sports leagues. Rec and Park's “Let the Kids Play” program will give youth a fast track back to the sports they love by providing field space to leagues offering a seven-week spring season for soccer, baseball, softball, flag football and lacrosse. This "mini-season" will start April 10 and run up to Memorial Day. For more information, click here. In addition, with practices beginning April 5 and running through nine weeks, a limited number of adult leagues will be permitted to play. More information will follow with the City's new Health Order, expected in early-March. To stay up to date on adult leagues, click here. Looking to get in shape for the upcoming seasons? Check out this list of great online resources for all ages that feature exercises, workouts, drills and more! A special thanks to community member Kim Turner for providing this list of resources. Outdoor Youth Sports to Return Spring Class and San Francisco Youth Baseball Registration Now Open Registration for spring recreation classes is now open! We're offering a number of virtual recreation programs for youth and adults this spring, along with some in-person youth programming, with the Randall Museum, Harvey Milk Photo Center, Sharon Art Studio, and the Golden Gate Park Senior Center. In addition, registration is open for the San Francisco Youth Baseball League (SFYBL) and will close on Monday, March 8. The first practice will take place on March 22, with the season beginning April 10 and concluding May 22. The $60 fee for the league incudes coach, team cap, T-shirt, practices and games. Players may only participate in one out of school time program. That means if you sign up for a baseball team, you cannot sign up for another sport or another out of school time activity. This is a requirement of the San Francisco Department of Public Health to limit the possible spread of Covid. Click the link below for more information and to register for both spring classes and SFYBL. For SFYBL team registration, visit sfybl.com before March 5.
