Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Installation Proposed to Honor Black Lives, History of African Americans Mayor London N. Breed last week announced the City of San Francisco is planning a new public art installation to honor Black lives and the history of African Americans. The installation is planned for Golden Gate Park’s Music Concourse next month, in time for Juneteenth. The installation, Monumental Reckoning, by Bay Area sculptor Dana King, honors the first Africans stolen from their homeland and sold into chattel slavery in the New World. The installation consists of 350 sculptures representing the number of Africans initially forced onto the slave ship San Juan Bautista for a journey of death and suffering across the Atlantic. A handful of these original 350 ancestors became America’s first enslaved people. The sculptural figures created in all black steel with vinyl tubing, each standing four feet high, would surround the empty pedestal where a statue of Francis Scott Key once stood. Key, who wrote the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner, was a slave owner and abolition opponent. Protestors toppled the statue on Juneteenth 2020. For more information, click the link below. Open to the public seven days a week, the all-new practice facility features top-of-the-line artificial turf, full grass putting green and short game area, new range balls, 20 hitting stalls, nine targets, professional instruction and club fittings, as well as adding Toptracer Range technology. The revolutionary technology allows golfers a virtual component that measures the speed, distance and direction of their shots. Through an app, players can chart their improvement over time or play a multitude of games. Read more about the improved facility and Toptracer Range technology at the link below! TPC Harding Park's High-Tech Practice Facility AAPI Month in our Parks: Sululagi Palega Jr. May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) heritage month, where we celebrate the generations of Asians and Pacific Islanders who have contributed to our country and communities. We are taking a looking at our parks and their features, which are named after prominent AAPI people or hold significance in the AAPI community. In 1996, the Recreation and Park Commission voted unanimously in 1996 to rename Portola Playground and Recreation Center in honor of Sululagi Palega Jr., a Samoan American and local sports legend, who was tragically killed in Modesto two years earlier. Described as a "Gentle Giant," Palega grew up in the Portola District and was a regular visitor to the center, where he learned to play the sports that led him to be a local star at Balboa High School and later at City College of San Francisco. At the time of his death, Palega was in the process of being hired by the Recreation and Park Department as a director. He is remembered today as a community leader and icon for recreation in San Francisco and local sports.
