AAPI HERITAGE MONTH

The Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community in San Francisco numbers more than 35%, and up to 38% of the population in both Alameda and Santa Clara counties. And, like our surrounding communities, our little melting pot here offers a wide variety of animal and plant species indigenous to places throughout Asia. Here, you can discover endangered snow leopards native to the Himalayas, Sumatran tigers and Bornean orangutans. Our rare red pandas are found in China, Nepal and India, and our Komodo dragon, native to Indonesia, is a sight to see! We are also home to Francois’ langurs and a fishing cat, both native to Southeast Asia. All of these animals and more are rare and endangered, and we are committed to protection of their native habitats and conservation of their wild counterparts. As such, we celebrate our culturally diverse community by highlighting our wonderful Asian animal species. A visit to SF Zoo & Gardens is a safe and enjoyable place for all, and we look forward to
seeing you here in the future.

A reminder that all visitors must pre-purchase tickets and book an online reservation during this time. Members are also required to reserve your entry date and time. This month, we're following Tonka to learn about ourAldabra tortoises (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=f4718a4651&e=7683a9aed3) ! Our animal care team memebers have trained our two Aldabra tortoises to touch a target buoy with their nose. The tortoises follow the target and we are able to use this behavior to move them from place to place. In exchange for following and touching the target, the tortoises receive a delicious piece of produce. Once full grown Aldabra tortoises can reach as much as 500 pounds so teaching them to follow keepers on their own is an important life skill. See our tortoises in action here!
