Celebrate Earth Day at SF Zoo
Next weekend is Earth Day (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=8d921dfbd1&e=7683a9aed3) and we are celebrating North American songbirds! Songbirds are passerines, or “perching birds,” and they help keep a proper balance in their ecosystem by feeding on insects, rodents and other small animals, while also serving as pollinators and dispersing seeds. SF Zoo is a perfect place to see a variety of native and migrating wild songbird species, such as sparrows, wrens, orioles and warblers and we want you to come out to seek out some of these beautiful animals. Our Interpretive Ambassadors will be out and about to answer any questions you have. Be sure to bring binoculars, or post your songbird photos on social media and tag us @sfzoo (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=eb16fd8d1a&e=7683a9aed3) !
You're Invited to ZooFest on May 13!
San Francisco Zoological Society's annual gala, ZooFest, will take place on Friday, May 13, 2022. As the Zoo's most important fundraising event, we're excited to welcome guests back to celebrate in person during "An Evening at the Oasis." Guests will be treated to a sumptuous dinner catered by McCall’s and to a special musical performance by Starship, featuring the amazing Mickey Thomas!
The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented needs at the Zoo and your support is more important than ever. All of the proceeds from ZooFest go towards underwriting the Zoological Society's animal care general operating costs and our youth education and outreach programs. What to Do When Your Kid Gets a Nosebleed
Around 60 percent of people—kids and adults alike—will experience a nosebleed at some point, says Amina Ahmed, MD, (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=60c03d911d&e=7683a9aed3) a pediatrician at Stanford Children’s Health.
The good news is that most of them are easily treatable at home. The cause is usually nose picking, while another contributing factor is dryness. Particularly during the winter months when the heat is on full blast, run a cool mist humidifier at night. Applying petroleum jelly just inside the tip of the nose several times during the day also helps keep the area moisturized and prevents cracking.
If a nosebleed does occur, have your child sit up straight. Pinch the soft, spongy part just beyond the bridge of the nose and keep applying that pressure for at least five minutes.
However, if your child is experiencing nosebleeds two-to-three times per week for a month, and you’ve tried the common interventions, then call your pediatrician. Learn more here (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=b461c59124&e=7683a9aed3) .
