Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Legislation Approved to Make Car-Free JFK Permanent The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved Mayor London Breed's legislation to ensure Golden Gate Park's JFK Drive remain vehicle-free permanently. It greenlights more than 40 improvements to make GGP easier to access for seniors, the disability community and those who live further away. The car-free Promenade supports San Francisco's climate goals including its Vision Zero strategy and Climate Action Plan. We look forward to supporting our city's environmental vision, while continuing to improve the park to make it more safe, accessible and equitable. Thank you to all who provided feedback and to those who made car-free JFK possible, including the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and Supervisors Dean Preston, Matt Haney, Rafael Mandelman, and Gordon Mar who co-sponsored this legislation. Legislation Approved to Make Car-Free JFK Permanent Francisco Park Opens in Russian Hill with a Community Celebration Mayor London Breed, Supervisor Catherine Stefani, and the Francisco Park Conservatory today celebrated the opening of Francisco Park. Located in Russian Hill. The 4.5-acre park consists of panoramic views, community gardens, and open space for residents and visitors. Francisco Park is the largest public park to open in the City's urban core since 1983. It is on the site of the former Francisco Reservoir, which has remained unused and fenced off since 1940. The park’s transformation was primarily made possible by a partnership between the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and the nonprofit Francisco Park Conservancy. Neighborhood residents and parks supporters raised $27.5 million to build the park after Rec and Park acquired jurisdiction of the land for $9.9 million from the Public Utilities Commission in 2014. With the completion of the project, Francisco Park is now under Rec and Park jurisdiction. Bordered between Francisco, Larkin, Bay, and Hyde streets, views from the park’s terraces include the Golden Gate Bridge, Ghirardelli Square, Alcatraz, and the Palace of Fine Arts. Native plants and trees support local wildlife, and an expansive central lawn offers gathering space for visitors. Additionally, there is a children’s playground and nature exploration area as well as a fenced-in dog run. The park also includes accessible pathways, a community garden, and a sustainable rainwater catchment system to save approximately 539,000 gallons of water per year. Thank you to all of the generous donors and supporters that made this project possible! For more information, click the link below. Francisco Park Opens with Community Celebration Neighborhood Field Trips Spark Golden Gate Park Love A new program aims to make San Franciscans from all over the city fall in love with Golden Gate Park. Like any good love story, it starts with a charming introduction and continues with a follow-up date to get to know each other better. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department’s new Community Shuttle Program hosted one such introduction last week for more than 50 representatives from community and youth organizations from Bayview-Hunters Point and the Western Addition. The shuttle picked them up at neighborhood recreation centers and whisked them to the park’s Music Concourse. There they strolled through rainforest habitat in the California Academy of Sciences, soared to new heights on the SkyStar Wheel, explored the career of Black fashion designer Patrick Kelly at the de Young Museum, delved into history at the Japanese Tea Garden and communed with Dana King’s public art piece Monumental Reckoning. It was the third monthly field trip since the Community Shuttle Program launched February 25. Two other Bayview groups, the Rafiki Coalition for Health and Wellness and Network of Elders, have participated. Today’s outing included members of Bayview MAGIC, a network of neighborhood-based nonprofit organizations whose mission is to facilitate, coordinate and develop community resources and opportunities that support service providers and community members in Bayview -Hunters Point; as well as its sister organization Mo' Magic SF, which serves the Fillmore/Western Addition. The Community Shuttle Program grew out of community feedback gathered during the extensive outreach process of the Golden Gate Park Access and Safety Program. Participants of all field trips are given wristbands for free admission to the park’s cultural attractions upon a return visit with their friends and family. In the 90's, San Francisco and Recology pioneered curbside composting. The collection of food scraps saved 2.5 million tons of material from landfill. Composting reduces methane gas in the atmosphere, helps farmers during times of drought, and creates nutrient rich soil for farming.
