ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Introducing Our New Pygmy Hippo: Endangered and Oh, So Cute!
We are thrilled to announce the arrival of a male pygmy hippopotamus! At two years of age, he weighs “only” 364 pounds! Pygmy hippos are related to the larger, river hippopotamus but are rarely seen in the wild because of their secretive, nocturnal habits. They also suffer from lower numbers and are listed as “Endangered” due to habitat loss and poaching for bushmeat. (Did you know that several species of hippopotamus are extinct?!!) His arrival continues SF Zoo’s mission to care for and conserve endangered species. As he acclimates to his new habitat near our African Black Rhinoceros, be patient as he may be playing hide and seek from his new pool!
Honoring Those Who Serve with a Special Tuesday Concert
Next week is “San Francisco Fleet Week,” and we’re honored to celebrate those who serve. On Tuesday, we welcome the Navy Band Southwest's Woodwind Quintet, “The Prevailing Winds”. Come and enjoy the 45 minute performance on Tuesday, October 4 at 12:00 p.m. in front of our Leaping Lemur Cafe. In honor of Fleet Week, we offer free admission to veterans & active-duty military from October 2nd-10th. Join the celebrations!

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
Last week, we celebrated Bornean orangutan, Berani's, 13th birthday with a pirate-themed celebration! Since orangutans are highly curious, treats were hidden inside big boxes wrapped in treasure maps and even a cardboard pirate ship! Check out our TikTok of the festive party here (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=9cf2140987&e=7683a9aed3) .
CONSERVATION CORNER
As you stroll the Zoo this time of year, you may share the path with large orange and black butterflies. These are the monarchs (Danaus plexippus), and there’s a good chance they’ve traveled farther than you have to visit the Zoo. Monarchs are most visible at the Zoo in September and October because we sit along their fall migration route. Unique amongst all North American insects, monarch butterflies undergo long annual migrations. Those east of the Rockies fly to the forests of the Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in central Mexico. Monarchs west of the Rockies migrate to overwintering sites along the California coast. They roost in places such as Santa Cruz, Pismo Beach, and Pacific Grove. Along the way, some stop to rest and fuel up on nectar at the Zoo’s butterfly gardens. You can track (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=995311af4e&e=7683a9aed3) the fall migration in real time through Journey North.
