Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks   Highlights, News & Announcements Famed 107-Year-Old Pagoda in Japanese Tea Garden Restored The Japanese Tea Garden’s towering pagoda, one of the few surviving structures from the 1915 world’s fair, has been revived to its former glory following a meticulous restoration. Public officials, history buffs, and members of the Japanese American community celebrated the completion of the two-year project Wednesday evening with a ceremony and taiko drumming. The Japanese Tea Garden is the oldest public Japanese garden in the U.S. Visits by San Franciscans have increased by 187 percent since an ordinance by Mayor London Breed removed resident admission fees to all specialty gardens in Golden Gate Park. The pagoda was built as temporary indoor display in the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition’s Palace of Food Products. It was relocated to the Japanese Tea Garden in 1916, where it sat outdoors for more than a century. While it underwent periodic repairs, this was its first complete restoration. All of the carpentry, roofing, and masonry work was completed in-house by Rec and Park’s structural maintenance crew. Carpenters removed rotting wood from the interior and exterior of the five story structure, uncovering Japanese characters indicating some of the pagoda’s original components were salvaged from shipping containers. The carpenters replaced some of the damaged wood with 100-year-old redwood salvaged from two water storage tanks at Camp Mather. Roofers re-shingled the pagoda’s five roofs, while painters restored its vermillion trim to vibrancy. Traditional bells and giboshi adorn the pagoda for the first time in decades. All were custom-made in Niigata, Japan. Carpenters documented the layout of the badly damaged spire’s copper adornments before creating a new spire from a recycled Douglas fir flagpole, painstakingly turning it on a 16-foot lathe to shape its taper to replicate the original. The pagoda restoration is the first half of a $2 million restoration that also includes a redesign of the surrounding landscaping and restoration of its long bridge, which will be completed in fall of 2023. Rec and Park is providing $1.7 million of the funding, while Friends of the Japanese Tea Garden has raised approximately $450,000 through their fiscal sponsor, the San Francisco Parks Alliance. We not only strive to bring children to nature but also nature to kids. Fallen trees from Golden Gate Park and the Presidio of San Francisco have found new life and purpose here as balance beams, wacky posts, and elements in imaginative play. We're grateful for the vision and leadership of Monique Guidry and SF Children and Nature, Low Income Investment Fund, San Francisco Department of Early Childhood, Rebuilding Together San Francisco, and Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds, as well as to Supervisors Shamann Walton and Ahsha Safai. Stay up to date at sfrecpark.org.    People of the Promenade in Golden Gate Park Sharaya, executive director of the American Indian Cultural District SF, tries to go walking along the JFK Promenade as often as she can since she lives near Golden Gate Park. Today, however, she came out to help with a street mural her organization has been collaborating on that will go on JFK Drive, just near the San Francisco Botanical Garden. The mural, titled “We are on Native Land” by artist Rachel Znerold, is part of Paint the Promenade, which will see several murals being painted along JFK over the coming weeks. “We really wanted to do something that highlights Ramaytush Ohlone land,” she said. “It’s not just about native land, it’s also about honoring the animals that are here. We have conversations about the park and accessibility, but there are very few places in San Francisco that are non-developed where the coyotes go, where the hawks go.” She added, “There’s a collective responsibility that we as people have to these plants, to these animals, to protecting parks, and to protecting these areas that people utilize every day.” People of the Promenade is a series of short stories, based on conversations with parkgoers we’ve met along car-free JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park. JFK Promenade   Call for Artists for India Basin Waterfront Park Project The San Francisco Arts Commission is looking for artists and artist teams to submit public art proposals for the India Basin Waterfront Park Project at India Basin Shoreline Park. Proposals for this public art opportunity may range from a single, large sculpture to a series of smaller, human-scale sculptures located along the walking paths through the current India Basin Shoreline Park site. Artwork should be inspired by and responsive to both the site and the proposed park design, including its natural habitats, physical landscape, site history, sustainability, and program. It should also be a point of discovery and have a cohesive narrative experience along trails of the park; serve as an asset for the community and expression of neighborhood identity; and provide a community benefit, which includes providing opportunities for artists with a meaningful connection to the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood in San Francisco.
