Earth Month in our Parks Nancy Pelosi Secures $3 Million in Funding for Japantown Peace Plaza On Wednesday, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi announced that she had secured $3 million in federal funding for the Japantown Peace Plaza Renovation Project, which will install new paving, plantings, informal seating and more. The Peace Plaza is an integral open space for Japantown, serving as a cultural heart and top destination for the community. Thank you Rep. Pelosi for being a champion for our parks and city! Thank you as well to Mayor London Breed for supporting this project. For more information about the project, click the link below. Japantown Peace Plaza Project Artist Proposal Selected for India Basin Waterfront Park Project San Francisco Recreation and Parks, in partnership with the San Francisco Arts Commission, is pleased to share that artist Kristine Mays’ public art proposal Joy Personified, has been selected to be installed at India Basin Shoreline Park as part of the India Basin Waterfront Park project. The proposal is comprised of seven life-size figurative sculptures grouped in three narrative vignettes: A couple dancing, kids running and playing, and a game of Double Dutch jump rope. These scenes of recreation will be located throughout the park's walking paths, and are meant to encourage, celebrate, and amplify the Black community of San Francisco’s Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood. Kristine Mays grew up in San Francisco’s Bayview-Hunters Point and Visitation Valley neighborhoods, where she still lives and works today. She is a graduate of Lowell High School and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Arts Administration from DePaul University. In describing her inspiration for Joy Personified, she states: “The way we can dance, laugh and enjoy one another in the midst of struggle, the way we move as a group and know that our ability to spark change is birthed in community—the artwork serves as a beacon for hope, strength, and liberation.” Learn more about Joy Personified at the link below. Joy Personified Wildflowers Blooming in San Francisco Parks With some extended sunny and dry weather coming up, San Francisco's flowers are starting bloom this April. Check out our list of blooming wildflowers, as well as our parks where you can find at the link below. When exploring our natural areas, be sure to remain on designated paths. Our natural areas are sensitive habitats that are home to a diverse array of animals, insects, and plants that rely on their environment remaining undisturbed. Enjoy the wildflowers from a distance and do not pick any. Wildflower Superblooms in SF Youth Stewardship Program Jumps for Joy with Spring Weather Our Youth Stewardship Program (YSP) is jumping for joy with this sunny spring weather! Though it was a wet March, the program was able to serve 421 students and 12 teachers last month through 16 field trips to pristine natural areas such as the Oak Woodlands in Golden Gate Park, as well as Alemany Farm, McLaren Park, Heron's Head Park and more. We look forward to seeing these youth exploring the wild flower blooms in our parks this month. To learn more about the YSP program and how to get involved, click the link below. That’s why on Sunday he took advantage of the heavenly weather to see the annual Easter Sunday event at Dolores Park. “This is the time of the year I start to come to the park more often, making plans with friends to hang out and enjoy each other’s company,” he said. And finding friends at Sunday’s event wasn’t hard, since the park was packed wall-to-wall with people eager to see the day’s entertainment, which featured the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Inc., foxy Marys, and—of course—hunky Jesuses. “I love the idea of all these diverse people sharing this space and having a good time,” Tomas said, “What is there not to love about that?” This year’s Easter Sunday event was also special because it marked the Sisters’ 44th anniversary, celebrating the advocacy work they do for San Francisco’s LGBTQ community and the stewardship work they do for the city’s parks. People of the Parks is a series of short stories, based on conversations with people we meet in San Francisco parks.
