See Our New Lioness Soon!

We are excited to announce the recent arrival of our newest big cat - an eight-year-old female African lion named "Marvella!" She is currently going through mandatory quarantine, but we wanted to let you know that she is here! The unique name "Marvella" was chosen by a generous donor as an amalgam of her and her beloved late husband's first names. We look forward to have you see her soon!

Become a Zoo Docent!
You too can become a Zoo Docent! Enjoy the outdoors, get to know our animals and share information about wildlife and wild places - plus it's a lot of fun! For those of you interested in volunteering as a Zoo Docent, we are hosting a Docent Program Informational Event on Sunday, August 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the large classroom of the Lurie Education Building.

The program includes a detailed presentation about the docent program followed by a complimentary Zoo tour and a hands-on demonstration on the use of our biofact cart (biological artifacts like skulls, bones and feathers). Enjoy light refreshments while connecting with others who share your passion for animals and our planet! Limited space is available. RSVP to docent at sfzoo.org (mailto:docent at sfzoo.org) .

Happening in August!
International Orangutan Day

Saturday, August 19 marks International Orangutan Day, as orangutans worldwide are celebrated and recognized. Here, our two Bornean orangutans, male "Berani" and female "Judy" are industrious, curious and interact well with one another. Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus), are endemic to the island of Borneo, whose rainforests are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Sadly, nearly 30% has been destroyed in the past 40 years due to deforestation such as logging, expansion of palm oil plantations through human activity. Bornean orangutans are critically endangered, and named in the Top 10 (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=b17f4bed9f&e=7683a9aed3) of the World's Most Endangered Animals by earth.org.

Fruit is the #1 food of any orangutan diet, though Berani and Judy really enjoy different types of browse (vegetation) from our beautiful gardens. You’ll likely see Judy meticulously “twigging” in her favorite browse – banana leaf, which grows just below their passageway - with tools she’s created out of other browse or enrichment items. Berani, our more sophisticated gentlemen, enjoys all edible flowers grown right on site, such as roses, hibiscus and pansies.

On this International Orangutan Day, we hope you will join us in celebrating this amazing species. You can also download the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Sustainable Palm Oil app (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=815aab22d7&e=7683a9aed3) , and learn how you can support the Bornean Orangutan Survival Foundation (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=adf9f9f489&e=7683a9aed3) , who are working on the front lines of the extinction battle. Oh, and be sure to stop by to see Berani and Judy at the Great Ape Forest extension!
