Jr. Giants Camp Miraloma: Girls Reflect on Camaraderie, Sports As summer comes to an end, we’re highlighting Camp Miraloma though the reflections of those who know it best. This all-girls sports camp is normally for ages 6 to 12, but its last week was for ages of 5 to 8 who are just learning how to play certain sports and games, including tag, kickball, flag football, tennis, four square, soccer, softball, and hockey. How is Camp Miraloma different? “It’s really great to have camps where all of the staff members are girls,” said Camp Leader Nelly Escobar. “I think it helps the campers having a role model to look up to and connect.” Camper Camila said the girl-centric culture of camp made her feel at ease. “We play a lot of fun sports at camp, and I like how there are different skill levels for each sport. I think having only girls at camp puts less pressure on us." Zoey agreed there seemed to be less pressure on campers when playing games compared to other camps she attended, and that capture the flag was her favorite camp game. We had a blast spending summer with everyone at our camps, and wish all of our campers the best of luck in the new school year. SF Marina Project Coyote Pupping Season Coming to a Close We are approaching the tail end of summer and that means coyote pupping season is waning and many pups are getting ready to leave their parents and strike out on their own. While coyotes are generally wary of humans, they are starting to explore the city for new dens. That means you might see more coyotes roaming your neighborhood. To foster a safe coexistence between yourself and our natural neighbors, please take the following precautions: Keep dogs leashed and cats indoors. While rare, small dogs and cats can be viewed as prey. Keep both your pet and coyotes safe by staying vigilant. Do not approach coyotes, and instead admire them from a distance. If a coyote approaches you, pick up small children or pets, be loud and retreat slowly from the area. If you encounter a coyote or see someone putting out food for a coyote, report it to Animal Care and Control (ACC) at (415) 554-9400, or by email at ACC at sfgov.org. This helps us better understand and track coyote hotspots across the city. For more information, visit ACC's page on urban wildlife at the link below.
