Sunset Fridays at SF Zoo, our new summer evening series starts this Friday, July 7, and will run consecutive Fridays through August 25th! After the Zoo closes, from 5 to 7 p.m., sway to the sounds of live music, nosh on tasty food items and enjoy conservation-themed activities while exploring the Elinor Friend Playground, Sculpture Learning Plaza and Dentzel Carousel. Yellow-Legged Frogs Released to Plumas National Park

Last week, our conservation team joined biologists from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, California Department of Fish & Wildlife and the U.S. Forest Service to release 167 endangered Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frogs into cool streams on the Plumas National Forest to improve their declining population numbers in the Sierra. With native frog populations declining due to the deadly fungal disease, chytridiomycosis, tadpoles brought to SF Zoo in 2022 were placed in an amphibian headstart program, which rears young, vulnerable tadpoles into adult frogs in captivity. After maturing, half the frogs were treated for the disease, while the other half were left untreated so biologists can test the effectiveness of treatments on their long-term survival. The frogs were returned to the streams where they were found as tadpoles and will be monitored for the signs of the disease. (Photo by Isaac Chellman)
A Charming Tea Party to Celebrate our Senior Chimps!
Our senior female chimpanzees, "Maggie" and "Minnie," turned 55-years-old last week and were treated to a "fancy" Alice in Wonderland tea party to the delight of the entire chimp troop, who foraged for their favorite foods, including escarole, endive and Roma tomatoes, and “sipped on” coconut water and diluted grape juice.  New research is showing that the mean lifespan of a chimpanzee is 33 years for males and 40 years for females. So when we say that 55 is a milestone birthday for Maggie and Minnie, we say it joyfully!
Our Traditional Cool Summer Weather Spells Relief!

One of the biggest misnomers is that SF Zoo's location by the Pacific Ocean means every day is beach weather. Well, that's somewhat true because being by the coast means cooler temperatures and ocean breezes, basically we're the perfect place to visit when it's hot everywhere else!  We recommend, even if it's 95 degrees where you live, that you be sure to pack a jacket or sweatshirt when you visit us! You're sure to get relief from the heat!
Happening in July!
National Bison Month
This month, we recognize National Bison Month, which commemorates the contributions of the American bison here in the U.S. and its recovery from near extinction in the 19th century. Today, bison are listed as "near threatened" with a stable wild population, according to the IUCN Red List. Here in San Francisco, you can view our herd of bison at the bison paddock in Golden Gate Park. We share a unique collaboration with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, as they maintain the bison paddock and surrounding areas, while Zoo animal care and veterinary staff manage the bison's daily care.
