Breed today announced the City will welcome Summer of Soccer to downtown San Francisco, including partnering with Street Soccer USA (SSUSA) to host free public screenings of the Women’s World Cup in July and August. Following a hugely successful Men’s World Cup Village that drew 12,000+ spectators in 2022, SSUSA will once again bring the live-streamed Women’s World Cup matches to large, pop-up screens across the City, transforming downtown spaces into an exciting, family-friendly World Cup Village. Alongside the Team USA Women’s soccer watch parties, the City will also welcome the return of the Street Soccer USA Cup Series to San Francisco for the first time since 2019 on August 19. The day-long soccer tournament, which features SSUSA youth program participants and adult teams from across the City, is the highlight event for SSUSA's year-round free soccer programs that target San Francisco's hardest-to-reach and most underserved communities. The Women’s World Cup Village kicks off at The Crossing at East Cut on July 21 when Team USA faces off against Vietnam, with an opening celebration, live music, food trucks, and family-friendly activities beginning at 4 p.m. The full event series will take place on: July 21: The Crossing at East Cut (USA v Vietnam) July 26: Embarcadero Plaza (USA v Netherlands) August 5: Golden Gate Park (Round of 16) August 10: The Crossing at East Cut (Quarterfinals) The free Women's World Cup public viewings are made possible through the generous support of various sponsors, including San Francisco's Office of Economic and Workforce Development, San Francisco Recreation and Parks, Yours in Soccer Foundation, San Francisco Parks Alliance, and BART. Breed announced this week that Another Planet Entertainment (APE) has committed to bringing free outdoor concerts to downtown San Francisco’s historic plazas. APE would bring a musical act to Civic Center Plaza, Union Square, and Embarcadero Plaza annually for three years starting in 2024. The new downtown concert proposal is included in APE’s permit request before the Board of Supervisors to hold two to three ticketed concerts in Golden Gate Park’s Polo Fields during the same three years on the weekend following Outside Lands in August. While APE produces Outside Lands, the additional summer concerts in the Polo Fields would be separate, smaller, headliner-focused events. They would use a portion of the Outside Lands festival’s infrastructure to minimize impact on the park. The downtown concerts were offered after several supervisors requested APE hold concerts in the eastern part of the City. Transforming downtown into a leading arts, culture, and nightlife destination is one of the strategies of Mayor Breed’s Roadmap to Downtown San Francisco’s Future plan, which aims to transform downtown into a stronger, resilient, economic and global destination. While the downtown concerts will be free, the Polo Fields concerts would be ticketed. The City’s permit fees, $1.4 million for a two-day event and $2.1 million for a three-day event, would allow the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department to continue to offer programming to children, adults, and seniors across the City and care for its facilities. The City currently faces a two-year budget deficit of $780 million. Like the Polo Fields, all three downtown plazas are Recreation and Park property. They regularly accommodate cultural festivals, concerts, sports viewing parties, farmers markets, and other free events. Supervisors are tentatively scheduled to hear the concert proposals on June 22. APE has partnered with the City for 15 years on Outside Lands. The festival has injected over a billion dollars into San Francisco’s economy since its inception. For more information, click the link below. Free Downtown Concert Proposal   Mayor Breed, Treasurer Cisneros Celebrate Success of Museums for All Mayor London N. Breed and Treasurer José Cisneros announced last week that the San Francisco Museums For All program was used more than 130,000 times by low-income San Franciscans for free admissions to 22 museums and cultural institutions. Nearly 20,000 of these San Franciscans experienced the Gardens of Golden Gate Park under the Museums for All program. A new case study and impact report released by The Financial Justice Project in the Office of the Treasurer and Tax Collector describes how the program increased the economic and racial diversity of museum visitors. San Francisco's Museums for All allows San Franciscans who receive public benefits administered by the San Francisco Human Services Agency, such as Medi-Cal and CalFresh, to receive up to four free tickets to any participating museum or cultural institution anytime they visit and present their benefits card and proof of San Francisco residency. Nearly one in three San Franciscans receive one of these public benefits. Access to San Francisco's great cultural institutions shouldn’t depend on income. Sign up today to enjoy some of these institutions including those in our parks such as the Randall Museum, Japanese Tea Garden, San Francisco Botanical Gardens and Conservatory of Flowers!
