ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Happy Father's Day, Dads!
There's still time to sign up for our Father's DayBikeabout (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=891af5e366&e=7683a9aed3) that is taking place this Sunday, June 18th - Father's Day! Kids - how about bringing Dad to the Zoo on Sunday for an epic outdoor excursion, ride the historic Dentzel Carousel or Little Puffer miniature steam train together, and then maybe Dad can enjoy a custom Zoo Brew at the Leaping Lemur Cafe! We also celebrate many of our animal fathers, such as "Oscar Jonesy," our silverback Western lowland gorilla, "Big Joe," our colorful male mandrill, and our male Greater kudu, in addition to our many black-tailed prairie dog, slender-tailed meerkat and Magellanic penguin dads!
New Storyboxes and Keys!
SF Zoo was one of the very first purveyors of the “Talking Storybook,” having first installed 40 storyboxes in 1959 – and for many of you that remember, the storyboxes played the song, “All the animals at the zoo are jumping up and down for you!” With the storyboxes came the original (and now collectible) elephant key which when inserted, played recorded, narrated stories about animals. Our storyboxes have had a few iterations since then, with recordings by famous local individuals such as radio personalities, and in 2005, we installed our first solar powered story boxes. You'll notice on your next visit, newly installed updated storyboxes featuring brightly-colored graphics and conservation-focused content! Plus, there is now a new portable “sample” box on display at the ticketing queue for guests to try out without a key. And of course, we also have an all new collectible key – it’s a blue and depicts a snow leopard! The existing Zoo keys will operate the new boxes, which include a
Spanish language option.
SF Opera Supports Gorillas on the Line
The Gorillas on the Line (GOTL) initiative recently received support from our friends at San Francisco Opera! In conjunction with the premiere of their latest performance, "El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego," about renowned artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, we presented our Western lowland gorillas with a colorful homage (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=f08fba9cb0&e=7683a9aed3) to the artists which included an altar, streamers and floral décor and importantly, specially-prepared treats along with their daily diet. You can donate your used electronic devices for recycling in the lobby of the War Memorial Opera House and at the Zoo to help save gorilla habitat. Rehabilitating Injured Wild Turtles
SF Zoo has been partnering with Yosemite National Park on frog restoration projects for many years, but we actually started out our collaboration rearing Western pond turtles for repopulation projects in the park. Recently a large population of turtles were found in a meadow system in Yosemite that is slated for major habitat restoration. Recently, park biologists monitoring this population in preparation for work to start made a grisly discovery. Several predated turtles were found in the meadow and later two injured individuals were located, but still alive. The turtles were brought to the Zoo for triage and care for limb amputation by a predator. Though injuries were severe, we anticipate that both boys should be releasable in the next couple of months. Unfortunately, limb injuries and loss are not uncommon in wild turtles and is seen more often near urbanized areas than truly wild landscapes.
Happening this Month!
Pride Month is Here!
In honor of Pride Month, SF Zoo has gone all out to recognize this important occasion. Guests will see areas throughout the Zoo decorated with the rainbow motif, and our gift shop has an all-new line of Pride-themed apparel, water bottles and plush animals for sale. In honor of Pride, our animal staff will be presenting various animals with Pride enrichment throughout the week of June 19th, so you may be able to catch some of the celebration! Be sure to check out our social media as we will be posting videos of our animals celebrating Pride! (Photo by May Woon)
