Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks   Highlights, News & Announcements   Fallen Tree Severely Damages Historic Trocadero Clubhouse An approximately 85-foot eucalyptus tree fell onto the Trocadero Clubhouse in Sigmund Stern Grove this past weekend, causing severe damage to the San Francisco Historical Landmark. Rangers responding to an alarm at the Trocadero Clubhouse found the structure’s roof and eave partially crushed. The interior was flooded with water from the damaged sprinkler system. The Department of Building Inspection subsequently red-tagged the building due to both structural and water damage. Virtually all of Stern Grove has been closed to the public since late last year due to numerous trees felled or made unstable by winter storms. A portion of the park has remained closed since August 2021 due to SFPUC construction to repair flood damage caused by a broken pipe. The Trocadero, a popular spot for weddings and other events, had been available for reservation only on weekends due to the construction. Rec and Park officials will contact those with upcoming events at the Trocadero and offer them alternate venues or refunds. For more information, click the link below. Golden Gate Bandshell   Women's History Month Spotlight: Halé Guerra In honor of Women’s History Month, we wanted to highlight Halé Guerra, the first female superintendent of structural maintenance for Rec and Park. Our structural maintenance yard (SMY) includes the department’s carpenters, electricians, plumbers, steamfitters, sheet metal workers, heavy equipment operators, iron workers, stationary engineers, cement masons, laborers, operating engineers, truck drivers, roofers, and painters. Early in her professional career, Halé knew that she wanted to work for a parks department due to her passion for gardening and the natural world. She realized this dream in 2019 when she joined Rec and Park as a SMY maintenance planner. Halé has managed to rise and make her mark, taking on the role of superintendent last year. Since joining Rec and Park, she has helped to implement new processes to streamline SMY systems, including new processes for how we organize and plan for Camp Mather maintenance work. She has also overseen the completion of high-profile projects such as recent repairs to Martin Luther King Jr. Pool, as well as pushing through many unheralded but integral projects such as roof repairs to Betty Ann Ong Recreation Center. She attributes her accomplishments to her talented staff and to the relationships she has built with her colleagues and stakeholders. What drives Halé in her work is a dedication to providing safe and well-maintained spaces for our city. As the mother whose child participated in Rec and Park programming and camps, she knows how much our parks and open spaces mean for city families. She looks forward to maintaining and raising the standards for our facilities so that San Franciscans can have the best parks in the world!     Parks Poised for Wildflower Superbloom As we get a break in the rain, plan your next adventure outside by exploring our parks poised for a wildflower superbloom! Role of Parks & Public Spaces   People of the Parks Sabrina crossed the Bay from Berkeley to see the super bloom happening at the Queen Wilhelmina Garden in Golden Gate Park, at the Dutch Windmill. “I felt like today was a really nice day to lay in the grass,” the UC Berkeley student said. “Whenever the sun is out, I try my best to be outside and enjoy nature and see everything the city has to offer.” And with some 12,000 tulips blooming this month, there’s a lot to see! “Tulips are my favorite flower. It’s been raining the past few days, so I wanted to see how the gardens were after the rain,” Sabrina said. “This reminds me of how special San Francisco is.” So far, some 5,000 pink and white London N. Breed tulips have bloomed, and about 7,000 more tulips—yellow, purple, and pink—are set to bloom this month.
