Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks   Highlights, News & Announcements   Design for Improved Jackson Park Moves Forward A new playground, sports viewing areas, community learning gardens and an outdoor ball court are among the features included in the Jackson Park concept design approved last week by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission. The $40 million renovation of the 4.4 acre park in Potrero Hill also includes the creation of a dog run; moving, expanding and improving the existing clubhouse; repositioning the currently overlapping ballfields to allow simultaneous games; and more! Construction is estimated to begin in mid-2026 with completion in 2028. The project is a private-public partnership between Rec and Park and the Friends of Jackson Park. Design for Jackson Park Moves Forward   Phil Ginsburg Named Chair of State Parks Commission Rec and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg has been elected to chairperson of the California State Park and Recreation Commission. Golden Gate Bandshell   Women's History Month Spotlight: Dr. Espanola Jackson In honor of Women's History Month, we're highlighting the late Dr. Espanola Jackson, a longtime Bayview-Hunters Point (BVHP) resident and activist who tackled a number of community causes including environmental, social and economic justice issues. She worked throughout her life to advocate for fair housing practices and the rights of low-income tenants, whether it was helping residents facing eviction threats or serving on the San Francisco Redevelopment Joint Housing Committee. She was also a vocal opponent of the development at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, while fighting for upgrades to the Southeast Treatment Plant. One of her greatest victories was fighting to close the Potrero Power Plant, as well as stopping the development of three new power plants in the southeast to replace it. She was the lone community voice of dissent against a vote to greenlight building new power plants in the southeast, starting a grassroots movement that grew to successfully keep these new power plants out. She was also one of "The Big 6" community activists that fought for the creation of the Southeast Community Center located at 1800 Oakdale, and is now memorialized in the art piece Building a Better Bayview at the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission's (SFPUC) new state-of-the-art center located at 1550 Evans Avenue, which replaced the Oakdale location. As a part of this fight, she also was able to push for what eventually became the Community Benefits Policy for the SFPUC, while also pushing for the city's Local Hire Policy, efforts that helped to inspire our own Equitable Development Plan for the India Basin Waterfront Park Project. These are just a few of her contributions to our city and the BVHP community, as the positive impact of Dr. Jackson's life is truly immeasurable. Read more about her from the San Francisco Bay View National Black Newspaper's recent article at the link below. Zoom Registration   People of the Parks: Golden Gate Bandshell Max considers herself lucky because in the midst of the pandemic, she stumbled upon the free live music performances happening at the Golden Gate Park Bandshell—and it rocked her world. “This place literally became a refuge for a lot of us,” she said. “I was working from home and there were days when I didn’t even go outside.” Years later, she continues to catch the free Illuminate Live concert series, which recently kicked off its third season earlier this month, with performances happening every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through November. “Walking down here is like a breath of fresh air, and I love live music,” Max said. “This became like music therapy for me.” Now, not only does she invite friends to the concerts, but she makes friends here as well. “One of my closest friends, I met them right here,” she said. “We just kept seeing each other here and now we meet every week.” Watching live music at the park is now a weekly tradition for Max, and she has no plans to pull the plug anytime soon. People of the Parks is a series of short stories, based on conversations with people we meet in San Francisco parks.   Upcoming Events   Community Garden Workshops on March 24 and 25 Join our Urban Agriculture team for free community garden workshops this spring!
