San Francisco Children & Nature People of the Parks: Maria Manetti Shrem Community Garden Russian Hill resident Alison admits she was green to gardening when she first learned she won a lottery plot at Francisco Park’s Maria Manetti Shrem Community Garden. “I never win anything, so I was like ‘why not enter the lottery?’” Alison said. “I knew nothing about gardening.” But as the park geared up for its one-year anniversary celebration, Alison had learned the ropes, with crops like garlic, shallots, lettuce, strawberries, kale, zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers already on the way in her plot. “I had no idea how much joy this garden was going to bring me… It’s been so much fun!” she said. And as an extra bonus, she gets to share the fruits (and veggies) of her labor with her friends. People of the Parks is a series of short stories, based on conversations with people we meet in San Francisco parks.
