Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements Rec and Park Receives $5.1M Grant for India Basin Waterfront Park The ongoing India Basin Waterfront Park project in San Francisco’s Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood will receive $5.1 million through a grant from the California State Coastal Conservancy to improve public access, and further habitat restoration and climate resilience efforts. The India Basin Waterfront Park project is among several projects across the state to receive funding as part of a larger $84 million grant from the Coastal Conservancy to support climate resilience, public access, habitat restoration, and wildlife resilience projects. The future 10-acre waterfront park is currently under construction. Once complete, it will seamlessly combine the historical former ship-building site at 900 Innes Ave. with India Basin Shoreline Park, which will also undergo improvements. The final product will create a spacious park in the city’s southeastern neighborhood, featuring shore access, sports courts, gathering spaces, multi-use trails, and much more. The new park will also close a critical gap in the San Francisco Bay Trail. The new grant funding will go toward the construction efforts currently happening at 900 Innes Ave. that address public access, sea level rise and habitat restoration. That includes building structures above high tide levels projected for the year 2100, as well as restoring nearby wetlands to promote habitat diversity and installing bioswales to manage stormwater runoff and a living shoreline to reduce erosion and support wildlife. The India Basin Waterfront Park Project is a partnership between Rec and Park, Trust for Public Land, San Francisco Parks Alliance, A. Philip Randolph Institute, and the Bayview-Hunters Point community. For more information, click the link below. This will be the kickoff for the Hip Hop in the Park Initiative, a partnership between HHFC, the project partners, California Arts Council, and The San Francisco Foundation. This initiative will organize a number of workshops and activations at India Basin Shoreline Park beginning in January 2024. The event will also open the Community Innovation Lab, an expansion of the park's Tech Hub, which has offered free Wi-Fi access, laptop and tablet lending and technical support, and a variety of community services to BVHP residents since 2021. "The Lab" will offer a range of services including rentable sports/activity equipment; space for community organizations to host their programming, workshops, networking events, and more; as well as free Wi-Fi access, laptop and tablet lending, technical support, and community services. The Hip Hop in the Park Initiative will be hosted out of this facility. This event and programming is outlined in the project's Equitable Development Plan, which ensures that the waterfront park will benefit current Bayview-Hunters Point (BVHP) residents while preserving the culture and identity of the historic neighborhood. It provides a blueprint for delivering a park designed by and for the community while improving economic opportunity and environmental health for its residents. Remembering Senator Dianne Feinstein & Her Contributions to our Parks We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Senator Dianne Feinstein. While much of the focus remains on her legacy as a trailblazer who led San Francisco out of a dark time before rising to the national stage, we also remember her as a champion for San Francisco’s parks.
