Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks   Highlights, News & Announcements   Union Square: Mayor Announces Partnership with Chef Tyler Florence Mayor London N. Breed this week announced The Greater Organization, Chef Tyler Florence’s restaurant group, has been selected to revitalize two spaces within Union Square Plaza. Miller & Lux Provisions will have two artisanal cafés — one adjacent to Stockton Street offering lunch and all-day brunch options and the other adjacent to Powell Street offering pastries. If approved, both cafés will open for business later this fall. The proposed three-year lease with an option for two three-year extensions will be discussed at the Recreation and Park Commission’s Operations Committee meeting this Thursday, September 7. If recommended for approval, the lease will go before the full Recreation and Park Commission for approval on September 21. The San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department issued a request for proposals in April to help reimagine the space as part of the City’s efforts to support Union Square’s vibrancy and attract new offerings for residents, visitors, and workers. “Union Square is an iconic part of our City and we are excited to partner with Chef Tyler Florence to make it even better,” said Mayor London Breed. “I’m proud of the progress we have made toward our economic recovery and excited to continue to promote San Francisco as a world-class food destination.” Chef Tyler Florence is best known nationally for his 27 years on The Food Network, and locally for his restaurants. He opened Wayfare Tavern in San Francisco’s Financial District over a decade ago and runs Tyler Florence Fresh at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). In 2018, he founded the hospitality group The Greater Organization, which later opened Miller & Lux in Chase Center. More Info   SF Arts Commission: Call for Artists for Gene Friend Rec Center Project The San Francisco Arts Commission is inviting artists and artist teams residing in the United States to submit qualifications for two public art opportunities as part of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's Gene Friend Recreation Center Improvement Project. One of the two opportunities is for the commission of a new integrated wall artwork, located in the center’s gymnasium. The second opportunity is for the direct purchase of existing two-dimensional artworks for the Center’s prominent interior corridors. The goals of the Gene Friend Recreation Center Improvement Project Public Art Project are to illuminate the rich history and full diversity of San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood including recognition of SOMA Pilipinas, the Filipino Cultural Heritage District, and to lift up the center as a destination and proud neighborhood asset. The application deadline is Monday, September 18 by 11:59 p.m. For more information and to apply, click the link below. With Summer Ending, Coyote Dispersal Season Begins As we move from summer to fall coyotes are beginning their seasonal shift from denning to dispersal. During dispersal, young coyotes are likely to be more visible across San Francisco as they roam through neighborhoods, parks, and green spaces searching for denning sites. While these sightings can be thrilling, it's important to remember that coyotes are wild animals. Here are some tips to ensure safe coexistence with our natural neighbors: -Keep dogs leashed and cats indoors. While rare, small dogs and cats can be viewed as prey. Keep both your pet and coyotes safe by staying vigilant. -Do not approach coyotes, and instead admire them from a distance. If a coyote approaches you, pick up small children or pets, be loud and retreat slowly from the area. If you encounter a coyote or see someone putting out food for a coyote, report it to Animal Care and Control (ACC) at (415) 554-9400, or by email at ACC at sfgov.org. This allows us to better understand coyote activity across the city and focus our coyote coexistence outreach in hotspot neighborhoods.
