Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements San Francisco Bay Sox Competing at Baseball for All Nationals In honor of National Recreation and Park Association's #ParkandRecMonth2024 this July, we're highlighting how our parks and programs help advance equity, improve health and enhance quality of life. This week we're highlighting the San Francisco Bay Sox Girls Baseball Program, the largest girls' baseball program currently operating in the United States. The program's 12, 14, and 16U teams are currently competing in the Baseball for All Nationals, with the 14U team defending its title after going undefeated to win the national championship last year. The program of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department was founded in 2015 by former women’s baseball players Rachelle "Rocky" Henley and Alex Oglesby with the desire to field an all girls’ team to represent San Francisco in the inaugural Baseball For All National Girls Baseball Tournament. The program has since grown to provide yearlong developmental activities and teams for girls ages 6-18. Since its inception, the Bay Sox has expanded from one team of 12 girls to serving more than 120 girls annually with our clinics and teams, in its quest to show the world just how much the game of baseball needs women and girls. Last year, in honor of the 14U team's national championship, Mayor London Breed declared August 22, 2023 San Francisco Bay Sox Day. Best of luck to our teams in bringing home the championship belt again! Learn more about the program, including how to get involved, at the link below. San Francisco Bay Sox Mayor Breed Meets El Farolito SC Ahead of Conference Final Game Earlier today, Mayor London Breed and Rec and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg joined San Francisco’s very own El Farolito Soccer Club at the Crocker Amazon Soccer Fields to wish them luck ahead of the National Premiere Soccer League’s Golden Gate Conference Final game, happening on Saturday, July 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Kezar Stadium (670 Kezar Drive). The team is set to face off against Napa Valley 1839 FC. The team, whose home stadium is Boxer Stadium in Balboa Park, made waves earlier this year after beating consecutive professional teams in the first two rounds of the U.S. Open Cup. The whole city is rooting for these hometown heroes and we’re excited to see what they’ll do next! For more information about the match, click the link below. National Premiere Soccer League SF Live: Tribute to B.B. Lake Merced Trail Project Community Meeting for Art Installation at Palega Rec Center on July 16 In 2016, the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) removed an outdoor kinetic sculpture from Palega Recreation Center due to mechanical failure. As a replacement for the damaged artwork, SFAC is considering relocating "Invocation," a sculpture by Pepe Ozan, to the center. In 2004, Pepe Ozan, (1939-2013) was commissioned to create Invocation for the Cesar Chavez Boulevard bicycle infrastructure project. The sculpture depicts a Mesoamerican Eagle Warrior and honors indigenous heritage and cultures. It is made of painted steel and stands ten feet tall with a wingspan of eight feet. Join Rec and Park and SFAC on Tuesday, July 16 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Palega Recreation Center (500 Felton Street) for a community meeting to learn more about the potential relocation and provide feedback. Coyote Pupping Season in our Parks As we hit the dog days of summer, it means that we're in the midst of coyote pupping season. While coyotes are generally wary of humans, parent coyotes may become territorial if you or your pet stumbles upon their den. To foster a safe coexistence between yourself and our natural neighbors, please take the following precautions: Never feed coyotes or any wildlife Keep dogs on leashes in our parks, unless in a designated off-leash dog play area Only admire coyotes from a distance If you encounter a coyote, slowly back away carrying any small children or pets. Do not run. You may also scare the coyote away by appearing large and making loud noises. If you encounter a coyote or see someone putting out food for a coyote, report it to Animal Care and Control (ACC) at (415) 554-9400, or by email at ACC at sfgov.org. For more information, visit ACC's coyote page at the link below.
