Landmark Release of Yosemite Toads

We are excited to announce the landmark release of Zoo-reared Yosemite toads to Yosemite National Park! Females and males are distinct in colors and patterns, and found in higher elevation areas than other amphibians.
Over the past several years, SF Zoo’s conservation team has been busily raising hundreds of these small but significant amphibians from tadpole stage, a species found only in the Sierra Nevada, for the purpose of reintroducing them to an area of Yosemite National Park where it was last seen 11 years ago, when the Rim Fire destroyed much of their habitat. The project to re-introduce this federally threatened toad is slated to take place over the course of up to five years in an attempt to re-establish a self-sustaining population. 118 zoo-reared Yosemite toads were recently transported via helicopter to a meadow this species formerly occupied. National Park Service teams will monitor and track the toads through a radio telemetry project. Each toad is also microchipped for identification. This is a Zoo-Park Partnership for America’s Keystone Wildlife, facilitated by Wildlife Restoration Foundation. Good luck toads!
World Chimpanzee Day
Each year, World Chimpanzee Day is celebrated on July 14, to bring awareness to endangered chimpanzees and the continued need to protect and save them. Chimpanzees remain among the most at-risk primates in Africa. July 14, 1960 was the date when Dr. Jane Goodall started her groundbreaking study of chimpanzees in Tanzania and her work continues to inspire us all. On this World Chimpanzee Day, we salute the work of Dr. Goodall and honor our own troop of chimpanzees, who serve as amazing ambassadors of their species as we continue to learn from them their individuality, intelligence and behavior. See our chimps at the Great Ape Passage.

Animal Ambassadors Needed!

Our animal ambassadors play a key role in connecting our guests with wildlife, as they represent the only Zoo animals kids can actually see up-close and even touch. Over 100 birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians are housed and cared for at the Koret Animal Resource Center (ARC), a working facility and key part of the Fisher Family Children’s Zoo.
The ARC is a training ground for future ecologists, conservationists, biologists, zoologists and animal care staff, through its teen, young adult and adult volunteer programs.

The ARC relies on the support of hundreds of volunteers, from teens to adults. Inquire about becoming a volunteer today: volunteer at sfzoo.org
