Reminder! Special Members Morning on July 26
To celebrate the start of the Summer Games, we invite our Zoo Members to a special Members Morning on Friday, July 26, when we open the gates at 9 a.m.! You can stay all day and then enjoy our free to Members Sunset Fridays event at 5 p.m.
As athletes from all over the world make their way to Paris, France for this year’s Summer Games, we salute their focus and hard work to reach their individual goals! We can’t help but reflect on how conservationists around the globe are just as focused on saving wildlife. The Summer Games do more than just bring nations together, the games help shine a spotlight on countries that are biodiversity hotspots, raising awareness to audiences everywhere.
Athletes will be competing in many categories, but are they as flexible as Judy, our female orangutan?

This Saturday, Free to Members!
Join us this Saturday for our exclusive free member event, “Drinks, Bites & Zoo Insights”! Meet Conservation Liaison, Leticia Francis, who will present “A Conservation Conversation: Inspiring the Next Generation.” She’ll discuss how our work to inspire the next generation of conservationists involving youths can make a difference at home and in the community.
The event takes place at the Osher Great Hall from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres, happy hour drinks, or non-alcoholic beverages while mingling with Zoo staff. This is a Members-only, free event open to all ages. Proof of membership is required upon entry. To RSVP, email membership at sfzoo.org.
Check out Little Mebo!
The newest resident at the Red Panda Treehouse is Little Mebo!
She arrived here in late May from the Memphis Zoo as part of a breeding recommendation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan for Red Pandas and was recently introduced to the outdoor habitat located in the Exploration Zone. Endangered red pandas (Ailurus fulgens) are found throughout parts of China, Nepal and India with declining numbers due to habitat loss, human encroachment and illegal poaching. They are not bears and are not related to giant pandas, although they do eat bamboo. The arrival of Little Mebo marks the first time SF Zoo has cared for this red panda subspecies (styani) as historically, the Zoo has cared for the smaller red panda subspecies (refulgens). Stop by and see her soon!
Sunset Fridays Special Offerings
Did you know that the gourmet food options we offer at every Sunset Fridays event are different each week? As an example, our fabulous chefs create a tasty new pizza, and no two are alike!

And be sure to check out the Cutwater Cantina, where our friends from Cutwater, the official canned cocktail beverage sponsor of Sunset Fridays, serve up exclusive products, not available in stores, including their signature cocktail, “The Savanna Sunset” - it’s delish!
If you haven’t experienced our Sunset Fridays, the event runs Fridays from 5 to 7 p.m. now through August and is FREE to Zoo Members. If you’re not a Member, consider joining and supporting SF Zoo, but if you just want to enjoy our popular Friday evening event, tickets are just $12 for non-Members and free to kids 11 and under.

How Do Zoo Animals Fare in the Heat?
When temperatures soar, SF Zoo’s animal care team works to ensure animal residents are comfortable, as truly hot days are rare in San Francisco. Most habitats have pools, and guests can often see animals submerged or cooling off in the water, such as bears, rhinoceroses and tapir. For others, animal staff may spray hoses or have available sprinklers directed into pools, such as the penguin pool and misters at the outdoor lemur yard. A favorite enrichment is using ice from a giant ice machine to fill buckets and bins for the cats, bears and other animals for play and keeping cool.

Alas, we are experiencing our usual July weather, a little overcast before the sun peeks out in the late afternoon! And, true to form, we have welcomed guests from all over California and beyond, coming to the Zoo specifically to beat the heat! And why not when 64 degrees is preferable to 110 degrees (per a recent guest from Sacramento)!
