APRIL 2025
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear SFUSD Families:

Spring is here, and with it comes a time for renewal and celebration. We remain firm in our SFUSD core values of being student-centered and celebrating the diversity of our communities. We are committed to ensuring that all of our students, families, and community members feel seen, supported, and safe in our schools.

This month, we are proud to celebrate SFUSD’s Pride Month, an opportunity to uplift, affirm, and celebrate the LGBTQ+ members of our school communities. As part of this year’s SFUSD Pride celebration, we will hold our annual Superintendent’s Read Aloud, where I will introduce a children’s book about Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of the U.S. House of Representatives. At another SFUSD Pride event, we are excited to welcome Honey Mahogany, the Director of the San Francisco’s Office of Transgender Initiatives, who will share her inspiring journey to public service with our secondary students. To explore a full schedule of Pride Month activities and access celebration ideas, I encourage you to check out our [16] Pride Month Resource Guide.

We also join the nation in celebrating Arab American Heritage Monthin April, a time to celebrate the rich culture and contributions of the diverse population of Arab Americans. National Arab American Heritage Month has been observed during the month of April since 2017. An estimated [17] 3.7 million Americans have Arab roots, according to the Arab American Institute. The Arab heritage reflects a culture that is thousands of years old and includes 22 Arab countries as diverse as Palestine, Yemen, Sudan, and Morocco. In SFUSD we honor our Arab American students and families.

Finally, I want to personally invite you to join me at upcoming in-person town halls in April, where I will share key updates on the district’s budget and stabilization efforts and answer your questions. You can find more information at [18] sfusd.edu/townhallsand further down in this newsletter.

Thank you for your continued partnership in making our schools inclusive and affirming for our students.

In community,

Dr. Maria Su

SFUSD Superintendent

In April, something we plan to make is Dubai chocolate (Kataifi pastry, pistachios, tahini paste) which is a Middle Eastern dessert that has gone viral and is currently popular with the students."

"An exciting event that will be happening towards the latter part of April is that Thien Pham, author of the graphic novel Family Style, will be coming to speak to and converse with a number of our English classes as they are reading his book.
I have also been meeting with the librarians from other high schools in our district to plan lessons around media literacy."

The Superintendent's Rainbow Read-Aloud - Pride Month in April

On Monday, April 28 at 10:30 a.m. Superintendent Dr. Maria Su will introduce a read aloud of Door By Door: How Sarah Mcbride Became America's First Openly Transgender Senator,by Meeg Pincus. This book tells the story of Representative McBride's recognition of her own transness and commitment to community service. In college, she came out as Sarah, and in 2020 she won her election to become a Delaware State Senator. This January she was inaugurated into the U.S. House of Representatives! Making her the highest-ranking, out, trans political official, ever. [25]

This read aloud is part of SFUSD's pride month celebrations in April. SFUSD is rooted in the truth that our community of queer, transgender, and gender-expansive students and staff enrich our schools and deserve to feel seen and safe. While our efforts are bolstered by San Francisco Board of Education policies and California state law, these policies are only as meaningful as our collective commitment to making policy a reality.

BRIGHT SPOTS
Getting Ready for Kindergarten: The Joy of Effective Strategies!

On March 18, 2025 at Leola Havard Early Education School, educators working with young children in San Francisco built community and celebrated overall gains in kindergarten readiness over the last three years. SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Su and Ingrid Mezquita from the San Francisco Department of Early Childhood gave opening remarks.

Kindergarten readiness, as measured by the Kindergarten Readiness Inventory (KRI), is on the rise in the district. K-readiness skills are observed across four domains (fine motor, numeracy, literacy, and social-emotional). Results from school year 2024-25 have been the highest we've ever measured in SFUSD!

The Department of Early Childhood released a study in 2024 that revealed that kids who showed readiness for kindergarten typically excelled in middle and high school. [28] Read the press release.
¡Viva el Mariachi! 10 Year Celebration

On March 21, hundreds of spectators lined up to enter Mission High School for the Mariachi concert, where students from grades 1-12 showed off their skills. This is the 10th year that SFUSD's Visual and Performing Arts Department has organized this concert. Students danced, sang, played instruments, and displayed what they have learned in SFUSD's popular Mariachi Program. At the end of the concert, the audience was invited to sing and dance along with the students.
Special Olympics Basketball Tournaments and Skills Days at SFUSD

The incredible SFUSD Special Olympics basketball season wrapped up in March, with four grade-level events and over 850 students participating throughout the district. Events fostered an inclusive and welcoming environment, with student volunteers from each host site helping to greet, guide, and run the activities. [29] Learn more.
