It finally happened —a friend’s daughter signed up for an expedition. I read reflection letters all the time and know how powerful these courses are, but recommending an expedition to someone you love? It’s nerve-wracking. What if they hate it?

Well, she just got back today and texted me from the Fresno Airport:

“It was literally the most amazing thing I’ve ever done.”

She even used proper capitalization. In a text. So yeah … I think she might be officially transformed.

Mid-Summer Magic

There’s a moment on every expedition when the team finds its rhythm, and things click — boots are worn in, packs feel lighter, laughter easier. We’re right in the middle of our season, and the stories coming in from the trail remind us why we do this work. After each expedition, the students have a chance to write a reflection letter. They are little windows into the expeditions, and of lives changed. Here’s an excerpt from one that came back this week.

“This course reminded me why I love being outside. Not only having the opportunity to connect with nature but also having the opportunity to connect with likeminded people who care. The instructors are unlike people you will meet anywhere else. They are people wholly devoted to their craft. Outward Bound is an experience unlike anything else and I spent the whole time extremely grateful for the opportunity. I wouldn’t exchange this time for anything. I wish everyone could experience Outward Bound.”

Announcing OBCA’s 2025 Blue Heron Educator Award Recipient

We’re proud to celebrate Diane Kimiko Sasaki (she/her) as the recipient of the 2025 Blue Heron Educator Award! A special education teacher in the Los Altos School District with 33 years of experience, Diane is known for her compassion, creativity, and commitment to helping every student grow and thrive.

Whether she’s co-teaching science, coaching cross country, or making the outdoors more accessible for her students, Diane brings inclusiveness, collaboration, and resilience into everything she does.

“Every day brings something different,” she shared, “and that variety, combined with the feeling that we’re all part of a school family, makes this work deeply rewarding.”

Programs like Outward Bound, Diane says, create spaces for educators to grow together, and she models that spirit in her own classroom. Her students’ curiosity about real-world problem solving gives her great hope for the future, and her work continues to inspire ours.
