On May 14, San Francisco Zoo & Gardens hosted an unforgettable members-only Zoo Bites Lecture, featuring the world-renowned Dr. Marc Ancrenaz, DVM, PhD, and Scientific Director of Hutan – Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Programme in Borneo. This exclusive event gave members of all ages a behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to protect wild orangutans—and how conservation starts with people.

Here are just a few highlights from the lecture:
🌿 Hutan's teams have followed wild orangutans in secondary forests for 25+ years to understand how they adapt and survive in fragmented habitats.
🌿 Orangutans have been observed building creative new nests—on the ground and in trees—showing remarkable resilience.
🌿 Male orangutans travel long distances to find mates, while females typically stay close to where they were born.
🌿 Major threats to orangutans include habitat fragmentation and the rise of linear infrastructures like roads and power lines.
🌿 Hutan employs over 100 staff, most of whom are local community members.
🌿 They’ve built orangutan bridges to help apes safely cross rivers, created reforestation units to restore lost habitats, and even install artificial hornbill nests and monitor frogs and primates.
🌿 The organization listens to and works with local people to solve human-wildlife conflicts—proving that “conservation is not about wildlife—it’s about people.”
🌿 They use thermal drones to count orangutans at night—just one example of the innovative tools being used in the field!
