### $2 Million Federal Cleanup Grant Awarded for India Basin Waterfront Park
Rec and Park has been awarded a $2 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to support the next phase of the
India Basin Waterfront Park project (https://t.e2ma.net/click/06r6rj/wfcl20hc/4x30lt)
in Bayview-Hunters Point.
Funding from the EPA, made possible through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will support the cleanup and preparation of soil at India Basin Shoreline Park, located at 401 Hunters Point Boulevard. The site once operated as a ship salvaging yard and was later used to store soil from major construction projects across the city. It has served the community as a park since 1996. This grant will address industrial-era materials in the soil and enhance the park with increased protection for the environment and the health and safety of parkgoers.
The cleanup will lay the groundwork to improve
India Basin Shoreline Park and connect it with the adjacent India Basin Waterfront Park at 900 Innes (https://t.e2ma.net/click/06r6rj/wfcl20hc/kq40lt), which opened in October 2024. Together, they will form a 10-acre, continuous bayside park offering miles of trails, new recreation opportunities, direct shoreline access, and increased resilience to sea level rise.
This $2 million grant is part of the EPA's Brownfields Program, which helps communities repurpose underused land for public good. San Francisco's grant is among more than 200 awarded across the country this year, totaling $267 million. For more information, click the link below.

### The Whale's Tail in Golden Gate Park to Return Memorial Day Weekend
One of Golden Gate Park's most joyful seasonal traditions is back: The Whale's Tail outdoor garden bar reopens Memorial Day weekend with an even bigger splash--featuring live music, guest DJs, paint-and-sip classes, interactive photo booths, animal fun, and a kickoff celebration for SF Pride.
Now in its fourth season, the family- and dog-friendly space will once again transform the JFK Promenade's Golden Mile into a vibrant weekend destination filled with drinks, lawn games, public art, and curated local food trucks. Located just west of the Rose Garden near 14th Avenue East Meadow, The Whale's Tail will be open from noon to 6 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, plus select holiday Mondays from May through October.
This year brings even more to love: a rotating calendar of live local music, DJs, family-friendly interactive events such as yoga, paint and sips, and photobooths, plus delicious food and beverage offerings. Visitors can even enjoy a bit of whale watching, thanks to the vibrant Street Whale mural by Reuben Rude just outside the garden. This colorful 3D installation and other public art along The Golden Mile channel the creative energy that adds to the whimsy of Golden Gate Park.
The project is a collaborative effort from Rec and Park, Illuminate, and Non Plus Ultra, all committed to creating an inclusive and joyful gathering space. To see this weekend's schedule, click the link below.

### Levi Strauss & Co. Spends 25th Annual Community Day Volunteering in SF Parks
Earlier this month, San Francisco legacy business Levi Strauss & Co. celebrated its 25th annual Community Day, with more than 550 Levi's employees volunteering at more than 20 sites across the city--many of them parks and public spaces.
At Coit Tower, Rec and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg joined staff, Levi's employees, and Levi's CEO Michelle Gass to kick off a beautification project at Pioneer Park, which included weeding and planting native vegetation.
During the event, Gass presented Rec and Park with a $25,000 grant--a generous gesture that celebrates the long-standing partnership between Levi's and San Francisco's parks. This meaningful donation strengthens a shared commitment to caring for the city's green spaces and inspiring civic pride for years to come.
A big thanks to Hands On Bay Area for helping organize this impactful volunteer day.
### People of the Parks: 40+ Women's Double Dutch Club at India Basin
There's always something fun happening at India Basin Shoreline Park--from basketball and kayaking to picnicking and more. But one activity jumping into the spotlight is Double Dutch, thanks to the local chapter of the
40+ Women’s Double Dutch Club (https://t.e2ma.net/click/06r6rj/wfcl20hc/w360lt).
Since 2021, this vibrant group of Bayview women has been gathering weekly to relive childhood memories, stay active, and have a blast to the sounds of '90s hits. With hula-hoops, jump ropes, and nonstop laughter, they've turned the park into a celebration of movement and camaraderie.
"What I love is the friendship, community, and sisterhood that the group provides, more than anything else," said Charmain (far right), a member since 2022.
And big changes are coming! This summer, India Basin Shoreline Park will begin renovations as part of the
India Basin Waterfront Park project (https://t.e2ma.net/click/06r6rj/wfcl20hc/cw70lt), transforming it into a vibrant 10-acre waterfront destination with new activities, improved shoreline access, and Bay Trail connections. These upgrades will help ensure everyone can enjoy this dynamic space for fun, fitness, and connection for generations to come.
