Superintendent's Monthly Digest
October 2025
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear SFUSD Community:
Happy Filipino American History Month! SFUSD joins the nation in honoring the historic and cultural contributions of the Filipinx community this month and all year long. Fun Fact: the month of October was chosen to commemorate the arrival of the first Filipinos who landed in California in 1587.
In SFUSD, we are committed to uplifting the cultural brilliance and historic contributions of the Filipinx community in our City and within our schools. I encourage everyone to check out our [15] SFUSD Filipinx History Resource Guidewhich includes recommendations on classroom lesson plans, resources, reading lists, events, and more.
I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to our incredible staff – educators, administrators, service workers, and more– for their tireless commitment, compassion, and unwavering dedication to our students and families. Your hard work each day makes a profound difference in the lives of those we serve. To our students and families, thank you for your continued partnership, trust, and collaboration—together, we are building a stronger, more vibrant learning community.
Please keep reading this month's digest for news and updates, resources, and bright spots.
In Community,
Maria
NEWS AND UPDATES
Please Join Us at an Upcoming Budget Town Hall
The Board of Education passed a balanced budget for school year 2025-26, which saw historic cuts while also preventing teacher layoffs and allowing SFUSD to fully staff all classrooms on the first day of the school year. However, SFUSD is still spending above its means and will have to continue to find ways to balance the budget next year.
Beginning this week, Dr. Su will host a series of town halls in schools and meet with parent advisory groups to hear directly from communities about what is important for how the district invests its limited resources. [16] Learn more about the budget and RSVP for a town hall.
New Math and English Language Arts Curricula Key to Boosting Student Profiency
The California Department of Education recently released the 2024-25 state test results for English Language Arts (ELA) and math. SFUSD students continue to perform above the state average, but the district knows there's more work to do to help every student reach their full potential. To support stronger learning, SFUSD has launched new ELA and math curricula for grades PK-8, with clear goals to boost reading and math proficiency by 2027.[17] Learn more about the ELA and math curricula.
SFUSD Partners with SFSU and CCSF to Guarantee Admission for Eligible Students
SFUSD is finalizing a partnership agreement with San Francisco State University (SFSU) and City College of San Francisco (CCSF) to create a guaranteed admission pathway for local high school seniors and community college students who meet eligibility requirements. The new program eliminates the uncertainty of the application process and expands opportunities for students seeking an SFSU degree.
“This partnership is an incredible opportunity for our students,” said SFUSD Superintendent Maria Su. “By knowing in advance that they have a guaranteed path to SFSU, our graduates can plan with confidence and focus on their academic success.” [18] Learn more about SFSU, CCSF and SFUSD partnership.

Ongoing Supports for Immigrant Students and Families
SFUSD is a [20] sanctuary school district, which means our schools are safe havens where all students are welcomed and valued, and where every child has the right to attend school, no matter their immigration status or that of their family members.
SFUSD has established [21] clear protocolsfor school staff in the event that immigration officials attempt to enter our schools. At the beginning of each school year, all staff are required to review and understand these protocols so they are prepared to respond appropriately.
We work closely with the City and County of San Francisco and the California Department of Education. Access additional information and services from the [22] San Francisco Office of Civic Engagement and Immigrant Affairs.
SFUSD Refugee and Immigrant Solidarity in Education (RISE-SF) is charged with increasing access to education for all immigrant and refugee students through the promotion of culturally and linguistically inclusive programs and services.
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA) was created in 2012 to give some undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children temporary protection from deportation and access to a work permit.
Request an Interpreter - SFUSD school staff, including teachers, have access to simultaneous phone interpreters through Language Line. Please ask teachers and staff for a Language Line interpreter if you need one.
