1. Question to mom's exclusively pumping...

For those exclusively pumping and exclusively giving
breastmilk, when did you stop pumping in the middle of
the night? And, how did it impact your supply? We are
working on getting our 5mo b/g twins to sleep through
the night. I still pump at around 3am and it is one of
my highest volume pumps (usually 13+ oz). I am afraid
to get rid of this session for fear that my supply will
drop. They will be starting solids in a couple of weeks
so maybe my supply doesn't need to be as high - but I
want to try to give them breastmilk for a full year.

For various reasons I was not able to nurse my girls
after they were delivered. My girls are 11 months old
and are given 6 feedings of breast milk, and 1 bottle
of formula a day. Because my twins are very small,
their pediatrician wanted us to fortify their bottles
with formula, and I am still feeding them every 3 hours
during the day, and every 4 hours at night. That being
said, I can't really recall when I stopped pumping at
night. It must have happened when my girls were about
6 mos. old. I just needed to in order for me to get
some sleep. My supply didn't go down noticeably. It
just seemed to increase my first pump of the day at 6
AM. I am down to 4 pumping sessions a day and produce
on average 36 oz total each day. I have to admit,
there were many times when I was worried that I
wouldn't be able to produce enough milk. Finding time
to drink enough fluids, eat, and rest on a fairly
regular basis was a challenge for me, especially during
a few particularly stressful periods during the year.It
wasn't easy to keep up the milk supply, but it's
possible. Stay hydrated, eat well, and get as much
rest as you can, because all of these factors really do
affect your ability to produce. I'm not sure if I
totally answered your question, but I hope this helps!
Please feel free to email me if you have any other
questions (I think my husband's email is linked to the
SFPOM site). Good luck on getting your babes to sleep
 thru the night.

Topic: Kaiser SF - your delivery experience and pediatrician
recommendation for twin babies

 Hello -

I'm expecting to deliver our twins at Kaiser SF at the end
 of next month...

thank you, everyone, for sharing your experiences. It
sounds like I really want to leave the hospital with a
good grasp on breastfeeding and may need to ask them
for additional support while I'm there (my OB indicated
that the lactation consultants would pay extra
attention to me because I'm having twins, but it sounds
like that hasn't necessarily been everyone's
experience).I had also heard from friends with
singletons that they were sent to Redwood City to
deliver because Kaiser SF did not have enough beds when
the time came. So, I hope that I won't run into any
issues with beds! Also, if I don't end up having a
C-section, I was hoping to try and deliver without an
epidural if I can manage the pain (like Kulida).
However, my OB is really recommending the epidural.
Any thoughts on this? I'm not 100% against the
epidural, but I feel that if I can manage through the
pain without one, I'd like to have full control over my
 body. Or is that crazy?

 I don't think it's crazy :) But it's difficult.Their
reasoning is following: if you deliver Baby A without
trouble and meanwhile Baby B changes her/his position
or something else happen and they will need to use
anesthesia for whatever reason they will have to put
you under total anesthesia. Facing that I agreed on
epidural. The thing was they didn't have enough time to
give it to me. I'm happy how it went but knowing that
the pushing can take even three hours (one of my friend
pushed for so long) I'm not sure if I would do the same
again.I think you can postpone the epidural as far as
you can. For me, there was a point when it was really
too much, but when they checked my cervix it triggered
the delivery. If it wouldn't be that case I would have
been happy to receive it.And about control over my
body... well, I have to admit I didn't have any. The
body did everything by itself! :)

I delivered at Kaiser SF on Dec 1, 2013. I had preterm
premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) at 31+5 weeks
and was on bed rest with around the clock monitoring
for a week and then delivered by emergency c-section at
32+5 weeks. They were trying to get me to 34 weeks
before delivering but my body just wouldn't do it. The
