February is "Senior Sweethearts" Month

We love senior citizens here at the Zoo! In fact, there are several "senior" Zoo residents you can see such as Uulu, the polar bear, and Elly, the black rhino. Plus, February is sure to be an adventure for seniors with 29 days of fun! Throughout this month, seniors ages 65 and up get 2 for 1 admission to the Zoo!

And to add some "spice" to Senior Sweetheart Month (https://t.e2ma.net/click/8eeci/o330mu/gxd6pc), on Valentine's Day, we encourage all seniors - and those who have an interest in animal mating behavior -  to join us as we welcome Jason Jacobs, Director of Reid Park Zoo in Tuscon, Arizona, for an enlightening presentation on the sexual behaviors of animals. The presentation is free to attend.

President's Day Fun

This President’s Day, February 15, we’re celebrating all things "presidential" with a special President's Day Scavenger Hunt! On Sunday and Monday, roam the Zoo in search of animals with Presidential names (past and future!) for a chance to win a FREE Family Membership to the Zoo.  Scavenger hunt ballots can be picked up at the ticket windows, Membership Services Office as well as the ticketing Gatehouse. Good luck!

Great Backyard Bird Count

This year's Great Backyard Bird Count takes place February 12-15. Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count was the first online citizen science project to collect data on wild birds all over the world. The results are displayed in real-time on their website.

To participate, visit the Great Backyard Bird Count's website (https://t.e2ma.net/click/8eeci/o330mu/cif6pc) and commit to count the birds you see in your own area for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the bird count. Zoo guests can practice their citizen science skills by identifying and counting our birds at the South American Tropical Rainforest and Aviary. Worksheets will be available to visitors and prizes will be awarded.

New Animals - Female Wallaroo & New Male Kudu

Exciting news just in about our little wallaroo joey! We are able to confirm - it's a girl! She's been spending lots of time out of the pouch, exploring the Walkabout exhibit. One of her favorite activities is sitting inside the feed bowl to eat.

Also, our new male kudu is now out on exhibit. This one-year-old came to the Zoo from Caldwell Zoo in Texas and has been easing into his new home. Come see both of these amazing animals on your next visit to the Zoo!

Bring your Girl Scouts to the Zoo for a Sleepover!

Coming up on March 5, the Girl Scouts will spend the evening and morning hours (when the Zoo is normally closed) investigating, observing and exploring animal behavior and conservation. Don’t miss this opportunity to have fun connecting with wildlife during an overnight adventure! An animal encounter, Zoo admission and parking are all included.

We still have room for more troops to join in the fun! If you are a Girl Scout troop leader or parent, be sure to check out all the programs we have to offer! Email scouts at sfzoo.org for information, or click here (https://t.e2ma.net/click/8eeci/o330mu/82g6pc) to learn more about our other scout programs.

Monarch Society: Join Now!

The first step toward wildlife conservation happens right here at the Zoo. By connecting people with wildlife, we continue to inspire public support for conservation.

The Monarch Society (https://t.e2ma.net/click/8eeci/o330mu/kgj6pc) was established to recognize and honor individuals who have included the San Francisco Zoological Society in their estate plans. A bequest to the Zoo enables our naturalistic animal settings, educational outreach and conservation programs to continue in perpetuity. What better gift can we give to the next generation than a passion for animals and commitment to caring for the natural world? For more information, contact Margaret Stangl at margarets at sfzoo.org.
