Kelly started early (9-9:30) with the spelling blocks, working on the
four-letter words and doing well recognizing the letters (with the
exception of W, which she called Q at first). She had good focus throughout
it all.
>From 10-11, we started looking up what mucus was (I wanted to try to get
her to understand what was in the boogers she still loves to eat), and from
there we talked about the nose, nasal passages, and the lungs. From that we
reviewed how the lungs, throat, larynx and vocal folds are involved in
speaking and singing (during which time she understood and replicated the
difference between whiny and non-whiny tones). At the end of that I showed
her how to get different sounds between diaphragm breathing and just using
her larynx and head. She chose to sang the opening of "Make it bigger" from
memory and did pretty good with it.
After that we spent time reading the Machines book, with her sounding out
the initial word on the page and my asking her questions about how many of
them she'd seen. And we finished up with reading "Hop on Pop." By this
point she was claiming she didn't remember when I asked her to pronounce
letters she had been able to recognize and read earlier. I asked her if she
would say "I don't remember" rather than saying she didn't want to. She
admitted that.
It was a good time. She earned three stars.
